OK to power down external drive when not in use?

As I posted in a previous thread, I have an external drive that is working fine, except that it never spins down. Since I only use the recorder between the hours of 8pm to 1am, I was wondering if it would cause any problems if I shut off power to the external drive when I am not using it.

I know the Tablo does some maintenance work at night, and wondering if anyone knew if shutting down the drive would cause problems.

I don’t see any benefit to powering off your drive. You don’t power off your internal drive, do you?

On my original OG Tablo I used a Seagate drive, and Seagate provided a utility to set how long the drive needed to be idle before spinning down - I set it for 10 mins. I never had any problems, most of the time the drive would not be spinning, just spinning up when needed.

Not sure how this would work with a 4th gen Tablo, or if your drive manufacturer even provides this functionality - but something to look into.

This is the way.

@Scandy - It’s not smart to disable the drive overnight because part of overnight maintenance includes database cleanup.
