Last night I bought a Tablo Dual and after setting it up and spending some time getting the antenna adjusted so I could get the stations I wanted everything was working well. I had connected the Tablo to my network via Wi-Fi. I then updated the Tablo to the latest firmware.
This morning has been a different story and I’m not impressed. I turned on the TV to check the recordings I had scheduled for last night and the Tablo app on my Apple TV 4K wasn’t able to find the device. It wasn’t connected to the wireless. After futzing around for almost an hour I finally got the Tablo reconnected to the wireless and was checking the recordings, which looked good, when the wireless dropped again.
After restarting everything multiple times I am still not able to connect the Tablo to the wireless, which is extremely disappointing. I wanted to avoid using Ethernet simply because I don’t have any free ports left on my router and I’d have to buy a switch and rewire everything behind the TV, which is a bit of a pain in the neck.
Any other way to get this thing to reliably connect, and stay connected to my wireless, or am I just out of luck and will have to buy a switch and rewire it all?
You’re better off buying the switch anyway. You can get a decent one for $10:
Wifi is not magic. Using hard-wired ethernet whenever possible will make your live much easier.
And, to be honest, the ethernet switches built into many low-cost routers are terrible. Using a decent external switch will usually give better performance.
If you drop a note to our support team they can do some network analysis and try to determine why your Tablo is having troubles staying connected. Sometimes it’s a router-based setting or a configuration issue that’s throwing a monkeywrench into things.
Sometimes changing the channel on your wifi helps. Getting those free wifi analyzer app on your phone will help to determine which channel is best for your 2.4 or 5 and signal strength.
Well, I went ahead and hard wired the Tablo into my network via Ethernet and, of course, everything works perfectly now. I’m disappointed that the Wi Fi is so unreliable, though.
