That’s the plan
The tablo bugs with Roku beta 7.x seem to have been resolved with an update pushed by @TabloTV yesterday. Have you seen this? It appears that all our testing and venting our frustrations to Roku may have paid off just in time for release.
+1 for Nexus Player if you can find one. I already had one and picked up 2 more for my other TVs to eliminate my 1st gen chromecasts that weren’t working well with Tablo.
Besides maybe Netflix, Tablo is the most important app experience and dictates what devices I will use since I have cut the cord.
When does Tablo expect to have a native app for the new Apple TV that will begin shipping the end of next week (week of 26 October, 2015)?
And will Tablo be working on the ability to use voice commands with the app?
@gardnerm109 - No ETA yet. You can read our latest update on this project here: https://www.tablotv.com/blog/exciting-apple-updates-more-choice-cord-cutters/
Picked up a Google Nexus a few days ago. It seems to work better with Tablo than the Roku does. You can’t use a Nexus with Amazon Prime, but it works great with Tablo, Netflix, Hulu, Plex and other services, for what it’s worth.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I got in on a groupon deal and got a Nexus for $38. Looking forward to its arrival.
Let us know how it all goes.
The Roku is really the “One ring to rule them all” of streamers when it comes to apps, which is why I always lean towards it among the large selection of devices today - and why I keep hoping that the Tablo app will soon works as well as all the other channels on it.
I agree, but I have also had playback issues with the Plex channel on the Roku with 1080p MKV movies, which play perfectly fine on the Fire TV. So I’ve stepped away from Roku for a while.
My biggest issue is lack of content on some of the other devices. All my movies are on Vudu, and I use Netflix and amazon prime video quite a bit. The only box with all those are the Roku. I would love to switch to android tv, as I have been eyeing the shield tv for quite awhile. But the lack of Vudu & amazon prime makes it a no go for the living room.
@wlburgess It doesn’t have VUDU natively (yet) except on Sony Android TV’s, but it does have Cinemanow, which works fine for accessing your UV collection. You can also use Google Cast to put VUDU movies on your Shield/Nexus Player, similar to Chromecast. I haven’t found anything on Amazon Instant Video setting it apart from Netflix or Hulu, but right now the only way to get that on Android TV is by Google Casting a tab in Chrome to your Android TV, which is less than ideal.
Between native android tv apps and Google Cast supported apps, I have found that Android TV actually has a GREATER amount of supported content compared to Roku. To be fair, currently Roku likely has the greatest variety of native content, but I also think it has one of the slowest and least attractive UI’s. It all depends how you prioritize your experience.
I’ve got two Roku3 models and 2 Roku2 Models (both first gen Roku2) They all work fine for me. The first gen are definitely slower to load the guide, but they’re fine once you’re streaming.
Casting Vudu would work fine for me, but my kids don’t have phones, and my wife is used to using the Roku remote. As for amazon prime, there are some kid shows on there my kids like. I am really hoping Android TV gets all the apps that the Roku has as I really would like a Shield TV for the game stream aspect.
Not trying to devalue those who have issues at all, I cant imagine how frustrating it is and am sure I would be very vocal and negative if I was one but I am not.
It should be said that not every Roku has issues. I have 5 Roku 3s, 3 Roku 4s, 2 IPhones, 2 IPads, 1 laptop with Win 7 and 1 with Win 8.1. I have also tested the system with a Roku Stick.
All over WiFi except one Roku 3.
Very few problems with any of them. (OK, we did have the FF - reboot issue happen two times, but that was months ago and never returned.).
I typically run the 720 setting but have tested the 1080 settings with little issue. Even on the top setting it works well, yes I get a LPW message at the beginning but after about 30 seconds, it goes away and played fine on two separate tests over an hour on each.
Couldn’t be happier with my Tablo or Roku.
I got my Nexus and after installing all the updates I am able to play back 10Mbps recordings with no buffering. Much nicer than the Roku. The Nexus will now be my primary Tablo player.
@nicholb - Are you on the Beta 2.2.7 release or 2.2.6? The reason I ask is that the beta release that dropped yesterday finally seems to have fixed the LPW issues I was seeing. I also record 10Mbps, and was able to watch an NFL 720p/60fps recording from this weekend without seeing constant LPW messages (on both Roku 3 and Roku 4). So there appears to be light at the end of the LPW tunnel!
I just installed the beta 2 of 2.2.7 last night. If I get time I’ll fire up the Roku and test.
Yes, I just noticed you have posted in that thread…
Yeah, give your Roku a test. Would be good for Tablo to hear from as many of us as possible who were having Roku LPW problems regarding the beta perfomance / fix for the issue.
In my limited tested, the issue seems to be gone…
I’m hoping someone can answer a question, and please don’t laugh at me. LOL Is there a way to use the Nexus player (ordered today) as my primary player with Tablo, but also have the old Roku connected to the same TV for occasional use with Amazon Prime Video? Eventually, I’ll get a Fire TV, after they iron out the bugs, but for now I’m just really tired of all the Roku vs. Tablo issues.
I even went to the beta 2.2.7 update yesterday. Now I have access to all my missing recordings, but it takes FOREVER for the recording to resume after FF or RW.
If someone can tell me how to run both Roku and Nexus in non-technical language (and keep the snickering minimal I’d really appreciate it!
