I am a current AirTV Anywhere user. (besides TiVo, of course). My wife and I typically use it to watch local over the air channels when we are away from home in our RV. Lately, the AirTV Anywhere has been disappointing me. Specifically, when I want to change channels, it often requires me to reboot.
I am considering replacing it with a Tablo TV. I have read that the 4th generation will not stream out of home, so I am looking for a DUAL LITE, DUAL 128GB, QUAD, or QUAD 1TB. I don’t want to subscribe to a guide, but I read that the legacy Tablos the free guide works for 24 hours. (I will start watching eBay.)
How well do the legacy Tablo TV devices work streaming out of home ?
In order to stream any legacy Tablo outside of your house you will have to have an active guide subscription.
That will depend on your internet connections on both ends and the streaming quality you specify on your Tablo. I have my Tablos connected by ethernet to my router with a fiber internet connection of 500 Mbps up and down. So the uplink end of the connection is rock solid but, when traveling it is sometimes difficult to get a reliable internet connection for downloading your local channels. If i have a solid internet connection when traveling the Tablo can stream very reliably.
You can also set the streaming quality anywhere from 500kbps to full quality. Lower quality is easier to stream, but also reduces the quality of the video received.
Hope this helps.

This. Our 3rd gen Tablo streams at 720p pretty well internationally but the problem we have is that my parents in the UK are on a very limited Internet connection, at best 9Mbps down. Our midwestern upload speeds are at worst comparable, currently 10 times that.
Finding a 3rd gen device though is pretty difficult. Also, it requires the guide subscription and if you don’t already have one the only option on a 3rd gen device is a monthly or annual recurring subscription, the lifetime option is no longer available.
Actually, the only new subscription available for legacy Tablos is a monthly subscription at $4.99 USD ($5.99 CAD).
I think it’s worth it if you can get it, especially if you’d get use out of the Tablo Connect. You might first want to check to see if you have a double NAT problem - this makes it a bit complicated to get your Tablo set up to view outside your home. We don’t know how long this Tablo service will be available. Here’s the skinny…
What Do I Get with My Legacy Tablo TV Guide Data Service Subscription?
Then, there’s the VPN route with the latest Gen4 device.
The VPN option works great for me with the Gen4. Tailscale as well.
jim1348,
You do NOT need a subscription to stream ANY Tablo outside of your house, well technically you do but not really. Explaining: It is very easy to put yourself inside your house while being anywhere in the world using a simple Wireguard VPN tunnel directly into your home router. Once you tunnel in you ARE at home in the sense you are on your LAN the same as if you were sitting in your living room.
Translation and tested over years by yours truly: anything you can do at home you can do on your wireguard tunnel. Never fails. Well you can’t unplug it, LOL — just saying. So legacy OR new Tablo same result ---- > good to go.
FYI, when I am fiber wired at several locations the wireguard tunnel is 500 hundred meg so its perfect. I still get over 200 meg using my Android mobile hotspot tunneled in and its smooth as well. I pay for corporate level connections so that is a perk some might not have.
I have a Tablo Quad that still works I am willing to part with for the right price. It has a 2TB HD installed which I added myself. I’m happy with my Gen 4 and actually have another Gen 4 as a backup so I do not need the Quad any longer.
