Hard Drive activity question

Just got a Tablo today and searched the forum and couldn’t find an answer to that.


I have a WD Ultra hooked up to the Tablo which has a very bright white activity light.  Does/will the device ever spin down or does the Tablo have the HD active 24/7.  I would think that would burn out a drive to have it always active.

Well I guess my question is - at what points is Tablo using the HD.  Only if the device is recording or playing back or someone is accessing a menu.  If I close the app/browser - how long before Tablo stops accessing the drive? Instantaneous, or does it go for 15 minutes or so?

Finally went idle.  Wonder what all that activity was…  happy though now that I know it doesn’t run 24/7

@SamCraig The Tablo will only use your drive during video recording or playback. If you tune to a live TV channel, it will stay tuned to that channel for an hour after you’ve finished watching it. This allows you to switch back and forth between tuned channels quickly. Hope this helps!
