External hard drives

Very true. I forgot the 4th gen did this for internal storage use. It is an interesting “why?”

Hi classicrockguy - I’m looking at this 8 tb external hdd - called Tablo and they didn’t have any info on recommendations for formatting - they said WD or Seagate 1-8 TB - nothing else - so wanted to ask if there is any format recommendations for an external HDD - and if this one will do the trick - that would be great! 8TB Portable External Hard Drive USB3.0 Interface HDD For Mobile PC Laptop | eBay Thanks for any help!

I’m not an expert on SSD drives, but I would be wary of a “no-name” brand. Especially 8tb for $50. Might be fine, but who knows. That is certainly way under “name-brand” prices. My advice would be to stick to name brands.

Do you really need 8tb? I have a 1tb and the wife hasn’t managed to use 10% of that. Between us we maybe record around 20 hrs of shows a week to zip through in less than 10 hrs (ha ha). I think it’s about 4gb per hour.

I agree completely. My brother tried a $50 SSD on a legacy Tablo and had nothing but trouble. I recommend that he return the drive and instead try a Seagate or WD external harddrive. Once replaced, all of his problems disappeared.

@murdstone On the topic of formatting, the Tablo will format the drive for you.

Thanks @classicrockguy and @3rdRockOKC - great - helpful - sincerely appreciated - cool to know Tablo will format the hard drive - I’ll find a better model - thanks so much!

I reformed my old Passport 600GB External HD that I used for a number of years with my DishTV unit, then my Fire TV Recast. I using my desktop computer to create a Windows volume and then I just plugged it into the Tablo and the Tablo reformatted it. Very simple process and I got to reuse an 8 year old external drive.
