What causes the Tablo to download so much data? Over the last 24 hours, mine downloaded 7.49 GB! The source of data comes from several IPs that are registered to Akamai:
23.217.129.106
23.217.129.104
23.217.129.91
23.217.129.83
23.215.130.107
23.43.59.161
Basically, this traffic uses up all my bandwidth (25 Mbps) for hours at a time. What is all this traffic for?
As far as I know, Tablo downloads guide data on a daily basis, and firmware updates infrequently when available and you manually accept the download. Also, if you’re using commercial skip, data is both uploaded and downloaded for that, so if you have a LOT of recorded programs, that might use more data.
Depending on the recording quality and audio settings of your Tablo, the commercial skip process will use between 100-200 MB/hour of recording in external internet bandwidth. If you schedule 40 recordings in a month this will equal approximately 8 GB. It’s more than Tablo uses for regular processes but is still only a fraction of overall bandwidth for those with datacaps. If you’re concerned about datacap overages, you can disable commercial skip at any time via your Tablo’s settings screen.
I have 15 recurring programs set for recording and commercial skip is enabled. However, I thought the commercial skip feature only triggered uploading partial recorded data. Also, the uploads for commercial skip usually occur within 15 mins after the program ends and there aren’t any programs set to record during the night, which is when 7GB of download occurred. So, what do those downloads consist of?
Also, regarding guide data, how big would that be on average? I would assume this data to be relatively small, not Gigabytes.
Uploads will still contribute to your data cap, and depending on how many recordings were processed, this can end resulting in a few GB of data. To answer your question about guide data, this is usually in the low MB range, but it’s all based on the number of channels in your lineup.
As far as those IPs go, I don’t immediately recognize any of them… Are you certain this usage came from the Tablo’s IP?
I have the same problem. I don’t record, don’t skip commercials but my tablo uses more data than anything else on my network. I have to disconnect it when it’s not being used. I actually get the same guide function and actually better picture quality directly from the antenna.
My tablo won’t connect surround sound into my yamaha RX 3080 receiver. Only into my LG smart tvs.
Akamai is an ad-serving platform - Facebook uses it as well as many other social networking platforms & websites. I doubt that this is on the Tablo…they are targeted advertisements.
It’s seldom mentioned, but you had to know there’s data mining involved…
NOTE: As outlined in the subscription agreement, you do agree to have some information collected, compiled and analyzed - which they have “exclusive ownership”. Nuvyyo has “exclusive right to use the same for any purpose” - what ever they want - provided they “not distribute any Compiled Data in a manner which identifies users.” While not forgetting they reserve the right to modify the terms.
Thanks for all the replies… after all, the culprit was a Roku device, not the Tablo! I should have been more careful in my investigation. I appreciate everyone who took the time to answer.
