channel reception

If Tablo allows me to record a game, can I assume that the reception will be ok?

It all comes down to how good your antenna reception is. I have a pretty good outdoor antenna with good signal, especially for the major networks. I actually think that my picture is superior to when I had DirecTV.

Now, antennas can get interference, especially during storms, but no more so than when I had a satellite dish on my roof. Once the storm passes it is fine. When I had cable, there were times when we had no cable for three or four days waiting for them to send trucks out.

So, in short, the answer is yes, just don’t skimp on your antenna. And, I don’t recommend the antenna that you can get bundled with the Tablo, or really any flat panel antenna. If you have the option, get a good roof mounted antenna.

Tanks

Agree with @KGBnut. I think I got lucky with my flat panel antenna (not the one from Tablo though) because I have no VHF channels to contend with and it works great. No indoor antennas work at my mom’s house because she has 2 VHF stations in her area. I have to get her an outdoor antenna or at least an attic mounted one.

I’m not saying that they are never the solution, but there are usually better options. As you point out, they tend not to pick up VHF stations, certainly not low-VHF, and they just don’t have much range. I do recognize that some people just do not have the option of a roof mounted antenna. If you are really close to the towers they can work okay. Still, most of them are junk. The only one that I think is even work trying is the Mohu Leaf.

That is exactly the model I have, a Mohu Leaf. I am ~25 miles from the towers I pull channels from which include all the major stations (and subchannels).
