Between my Tablo, the antenna, and an external SSD, my inexpensive Tablo solution ballooned to about $450.00. It was worth every penny. I’ve been using my system for about eight months now and my savings so far, having told DirecTV to get lost, is over $1200.00.
i have tablo on an android 12 device and an android 11 and i have no problems
My Roku Ultra arrived today and I have to agree the Tablo app works much better on this host than with either a Google TV Chromecast dongle or the native Samsung Tablo app. The guide navigates quickly, no strange pauses or delays and I have yet to have the Tablo app crash (happened frequently on Google TV host). DVR navigation is also very good.
So this is the user experience I expected when I bought my Tablo. It took a while to get here and some added expense ($106 USD for a Roku Ultra) but as this location is our primary viewing spot I can justify it. I won’t run out and buy Roku Ultra’s for the other TVs yet but maybe Tablo will rise to the challenge and fix the Samsung native app. In any case the current user experience on the Roku Ultra platform should be the standard by which these lesser apps are measured to.
Thanks to the suggestions from many of you. Hopefully this thread will help others excited with the promise of Tablo but left disappointed with the substandard client software. Spending some $$$ to upgrade your streaming client can solve the most annoying problems like I was having.
Super! Roku is about to roll out a new software update. You may have 14.1.4 and should be getting 14.5 in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this won’t tank your experience. Enjoy!
Just a further update.
I bought a Roku Express 4k+ for a fourth TV in my home that doesn’t have easy access to ethernet. It actually works very well (running over WiFi), much like the Roku Ultra experience. So that is a slightly less expensive option than the Ultra.
Good guide and DVR navigation and no app crashes. If you are struggling with a TV based Tablo app this may get you out of jail.
I stayed away from the wireless remotes because of the short battery life. The ability to use vocal commands to control the Roku wasn’t worth it. Especially since the commands go out over the internet to their server farm where the voices picked up by the remote has to be monitored and deciphered.
