I run it on my Linux servers.
All my movies, videos, and music…
I have it on a 2019 shield. But I really don’t use it. The DVR is shoe horned onto a media server. Way too many optional settings to do something simple. It can have the same guide issues as all DVR’s. But plex and channels don’t have manual recording - unless you use command line functionality.
I rarely use Plex, ever since a major upgrade (if you can call it that)
All I wanted it for was for my libraries.
They made it difficult to do anything.
so what alternatives are there that like tablo will let me use indoor antenna in one room, and allow me to connect using wifi and app, to a TV in another room?
You don’t need Plex or even a media server to use an HDhomerun Flex model.
Just as with Tablo, you can directly connect via USB a portable hard drive, and use the HDhomerun app on most streaming platforms. The setup is very easy. The only difference is that to use DVR on HDhomerun’s app, you pay a $35 annual subscription, whereas Tablo doesn’t charge that fee.
But as we’re currently learning with Tablo, sometimes the cheap comes out expensive.
BTW, the two-tuner Flex Duo is $110, not that different than Tablo’s two-tuner.
HDhomerun Flex models - see my previous comment in this thread.
So I’m going back to HDhomerun, new box arrives today. I was considering using Emby and my nVidia Shield Pro to create a media server, instead of the HDhomerun app and their annual subscription for DVR.
Is setting that up on the Shield really that big a pain… and the resulting performance might not be worth the effort?
No and there are tons of tutorial videos. But with tablo legacy It’s h.264. All I have to do is pick a recording quality option. And I’m done. I don’t use remote connect. The gen 4 is mpeg2. Nothing to choose.
The problem with the gen 4 is it’s design to phone home and whatever happened to the guide. With legacy I can access my units using roku and fire TV stick when the internet is down.
But I do use my hdhomerun for some linear tv since my model supports ATSC 3.0. Plex doesn’t support ATSC 3.0 and may never support it.
IOW I don’t need a hard wire connection between the HDHR box and my router, I can just use the HDHR app on my Roku box and it will find the HDHR on my home wifi network? (same way I have Tablo set up now;) And attach an external drive to the HDHR box USB. Seems purchase of guide is needed to record.
The links that might explain this on the HDHR website are broken.
Thank you.
So, I haven’t investigated devices other than PLEX but they have a selection of player downloads:
HDHomeRun App for Windows 10/11 – opens Windows Store
HDHomeRun App for iPhone/iPad – opens iTunes Store
HDHomeRun App for Android – opens Google Play Store
HDHomeRun Software for Windows – includes firmware upgrade
HDHomeRun Software for Mac – includes firmware upgrade
HDHomeRun Software for Linux
I bought my HDHomeRun FLEX 4K directly on their home page. I grabbed a factory refurbished unit for $174.99 - a $25 discount.
Yep, exactly. I repurposed a Intel NUC with a 3rd gen Intel i7 CPU running with a 2TB M.2 and 16GB RAM. Been running that as my PLEX server for about a year. I think it’s a little underpowered now that I’ve added the LiveTV/DVR capability, so I’ll be upgrading it to an 11th gen i7 with another used NUC that I just bought on eBay.
I have 3 Zapperbox’s, 2 Tablos, TiVo Bolt, sold my GT Media and HDHR box’s and the best was the TiVo by far. Next might be the older black Tablo Quad with commercial skip and Tablo Ripper, then maybe the Zapperbox is next if you dont need streaming as hdmi connected like TiVo.
I have lifetime Emby and Plex just didn’t like doing it this way with HDHR.
I actually had Tivo about 10 years ago. I loved it. BUT when my stuff started breaking, it was too expensive to replace. When they all died out, I went to DirectTV Stream. My cable bill was too dang high, then went over to Tablo.
I can vouch.. if you got the money. Tivo is awesome! TV isnt that important to me to spend that kind of cash.
HDHR Flex models connect only via ethernet cable to your router.
As I understand it, their website is in the process of being upgraded / replaced by an all-new site.
I would argue that the PLEX player GUI is more intuitive to schedule and work with recordings than TABLO, but that opinion is subjective. YMMV.
Manual recording? Sure, I can do that with Plex. I go to the guide, and if there’s something on at the moment, I can tell it to start recording a program or a channel with a click or two. Is that what you mean?
Yes, not having a WiFi backhaul was a showstopper for me on the the HDHomeRun, but then I realized how cheap used ASUS WiFi routers were on eBay. I grabbed one that had the AIMesh feature to use as a mesh node with the HDHomeRun connected to one of it’s local LAN ports. Was super simple to set up. Really improved the WiFi coverage on my property also!
Do you mean TABLO or PLEX? Sounds like you’re describing TABLO. JMHO. ![]()
Looks like for me, Tablo remains the simplest workable option.
It’s no problem for me to connect my antennas to the gateway, but then I need the gateway to connect wirelessly to my roku. Tablo does that.
Yeah, Tablo too. Haha
Manual recording.
I moved from Channels DVR to Tablo when Channels no longer supported the Raspberry Pi4 I was using as my server. I’m no techie so I didn’t migrate to a mini-PC and thought Tablo would suffice. Like many, I’ve encountered performance and guide problems, and it’s certainly gotten old. I’m going to give it a few more months and if problems persist, I’ll teach myself all I need to know to flip back to Channels. All I want is the ability to sit down and watch live and recorded OTA programming.
Tablo has only one job, and right now I’ve got them on a PIP.
This should be Tablo’s only focus right now:
"All I want is the ability to sit down and watch live and recorded OTA programming. "
